Is this funded by the NDIS?
Many sensory items are considered everyday household items and so are not automatically approved to purchase with NDIS funds. This can include Fidget Toys, furniture such as bean bags and noise cancelling headphones.
On the NDIS website under 'Sensory Equipment' under 'Why wouldn't we fund this?', the NDIS specifies:
"Many sensory supports such as balls, fidgets, trampolines, and swing sets are everyday household items that are found in many Australian homes...
There isn’t enough research or evidence that tells us this type of sensory equipment is effective. In fact, some research shows that this sensory equipment isn’t likely to help improve your ability to carry out daily tasks."
Its also important to consider that some sensory products, such as weighted blankets and trampolines, may also pose a risk to children. Any items that may be harmful are not likely to be funded through the NDIS.
What's next?
Even though many Sensory Items aren't typically funded through the NDIS, there are some alternative options to see if these items may be included if you think they would be beneficial for you.
- Written NDIA Approval: If you are looking to purchase a specific item that isn't already included in your plan, this will typically require written NDIA Approval.
- Included in your Plan: If you have a plan review coming up, this is a great time to discuss these supports with your NDIS Planner. You may need Supportive Evidence from a Allied Health Professional.
