For many NDIS participants, an iPad or tablet is far more than just a consumer electronic device. When it's primarily used as a critical piece of Assistive Technology (AT) – for example, as a dedicated communication device (AAC), for accessing disability-specific apps, or for controlling environmental supports – its repair becomes a vital consideration for maintaining independence and participation.
As your Plan Manager, we're here to help you navigate the process of getting your NDIS-funded tablet/iPad repaired. While the NDIS generally doesn't fund repairs for personal electronics used for general purposes, specific criteria apply when your tablet/iPad serves as essential assistive technology.
When Can an iPad Repair Be NDIS-Funded?
The key distinction lies in the primary purpose and specific use of the tablet/iPad within your NDIS plan. The NDIS may fund an iPad repair if:
- ✅ It was an approved Assistive Technology item in your plan: This is the most crucial point. Your iPad must have been explicitly identified and funded in your NDIS plan as assistive technology, typically due to its use for communication (e.g., loaded with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) software) or to access other disability-specific supports. iPads purchased for general entertainment, social media, or mainstream education are generally considered everyday living costs and would not be eligible for NDIS-funded repairs.
- ✅ PACE Plan Funding is Available: The plan requires Support Category 19, 'CB: Assistive Technology Maintenance, Repair and Rental' funds to be available.
- ✅ The repair is "reasonable and necessary": The repair must directly relate to your disability support needs and be a cost-effective solution compared to replacing the device.
- ✅ It's for ongoing use: The repair ensures the continued use of an essential piece of AT that helps you achieve your NDIS goals.
- ✅ Ownership: You must own the iPad, not be leasing or borrowing it, as the owner is typically responsible for repairs.
Want This Support Funded?
If you believe the repair is essential, there are two main pathways to seek NDIS funding:
-
Gain Written NDIS Approval:
You can request a review or submit an application for this support to be considered. This requires:- Contacting the NDIS directly via your My NDIS Contact
-
Get the Support Built Into the Plan:
- Work with your Support Coordinator or My NDIS Contact to have this service included in your plan during a plan review.
❗ Important: Plan Managers cannot approve or authorise funding for these types of services. Only an NDIS Delegate or My NDIS Contact can provide this authority.
💡What to Do When Your NDIS-Funded tablet/iPad Needs Repair
If your NDIS-funded tablet/iPad, used as Assistive Technology, needs repair, here's a general guide to the process and how your Plan Manager can assist:
-
Assess the Damage & Check Warranty:
- Identify the issue: What's wrong with the tablet/iPad? (e.g., cracked screen, battery issues, software malfunction).
- Check for warranty: Does the tablet/iPad still have a manufacturer's warranty or extended warranty that might cover the repair? Always explore this option first, as it may avoid using your NDIS funds.
- Is it Accidental Damage? The NDIS can cover repairs due to accidental damage, which may not be covered by warranty.
-
Obtain a Quote from an Authorised Repairer:
- Find a suitable repairer: Seek out an authorised Apple/other repair centre or a reputable IT/device repair service that is familiar with NDIS processes (some specifically register as NDIS providers for AT repairs).
-
Get a detailed quote: The quote should clearly state:
- The nature of the damage.
- The proposed repair work.
- The cost of parts and labour.
- An assessment of whether the repair is good value for money compared to replacement (especially for older devices).
- Confirmation that the tablet/iPad is indeed your property.
-
Contact Your Plan Manager:
- Share the details: Provide your Plan Manager with the repair quote and information about how the iPad is used as Assistive Technology within your NDIS plan.
- Check your budget: Your Plan Manager will check if you have sufficient funds in your Capital – Assistive Technology budget or, for small repairs, potentially your Core – Consumables budget. The NDIS typically includes an allowance for repairs and maintenance for AT items in your plan.
- Urgent Repairs: If the iPad is essential for safety, communication, or daily living activities and the repair is urgent (e.g., loss of AAC functionality), inform your Plan Manager immediately. The NDIS has specific guidelines for urgent AT repairs, and in some cases, the NDIS Contact Centre can provide immediate authorisation if funds aren't readily available in your plan.
-
Approval and Payment:
- For most repairs under $1,500, a quote and justification of its AT use are generally sufficient for your Plan Manager to process payment if funding is available.
- For more complex or higher-cost repairs, or if the repairer advises that replacing the device is better value, the NDIS may require further information or a formal AT advisor's report to justify the repair or a potential replacement. Your Plan Manager can advise if this is necessary.
- Once approved, your Plan Manager will process the payment to the repair provider directly from your NDIS funds.
