Overview
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a support item funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to assist participants with psychosocial disabilities in their recovery journey. Introduced on 1 July 2020, this support aims to integrate recovery-oriented practice within the NDIS framework/
It’s important to note that this is only a guide to assist you make an informed decision. Only your My NDIS Contact, an NDIS Delegate, or the explicit written information in a current NDIS plan serves as the source of truth. The NDIS considers requests based on whether the support is related to your disability and whether it meets the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines.
What Is Funded
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a support which is required to be included in an NDIS plan to be utilised. This support is available Under 'Capacity Building - Support Coordination and Psychosocial Recovery Coaches'. The following activities are funded as part of Psychosocial Recovery Coaching:
Support Coordination and Psychosocial Recovery Coaches
- ✅ Recovery-Oriented Support: Assisting participants to take more control of their lives and to better manage the complex challenges of day-to-day living.
- ✅ Coordination of Services: Helping participants to coordinate their NDIS and other supports, including mental health services, to ensure they work well together.
- ✅ Building Capacity and Resilience: Supporting participants to build capacity and resilience through strong and respectful relationships.
- ✅ Support Planning: Working collaboratively with participants to design, plan, and implement a recovery plan that aligns with their goals and aspirations.
Supports Requiring NDIS Approval
Certain supports may require additional approval from the NDIS before they can be included in a participant's plan:
- ⚠️ High-Cost Supports: Items or services that are high in cost may need to be justified and approved based on the participant's individual needs.
- ⚠️ Specialised Services: Supports that are highly specialised or not commonly used may require evidence of necessity and approval.
- ⚠️Non-Standard Supports: Any support that falls outside the typical offerings of the NDIS may need to be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.
Supports Not Within Scope
The following are not typically funded under Psychosocial Recovery Coaching:
- ❌ Clinical Services: Medical or clinical services such as diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions are not covered.
- ❌ Crisis Intervention: Immediate crisis intervention services are outside the scope of recovery coaching.
- ❌ General Life Coaching: Services that do not specifically address psychosocial recovery goals are not included.

Participant Responsibilities
NDIS participants play a key role in managing their supports responsibly. Here’s what participants need to know:

⏳ Know Your Funding Periods | Be aware of how your funding is spread across the life of your plan. |
✅ Spend in Line with the Plan | Supports must meet the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary criteria. |
