The following information is to provide you with examples of what the NDIS may fund. It’s important to note that this is only a guide to assist you make an informed decision. Only your My NDIS Contact, an NDIS Delegate, or the explicit written information in a current NDIS plan serves as the source of truth. The NDIS considers requests based on whether the support is related to your disability and whether it meets the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines.
What are Vehicle Modifications?
Vehicle modifications refer to adjustments made to a vehicle to ensure a participant can safely operate, enter, exit, or travel in the vehicle. These supports enable greater independence and community participation for people with disability.
Under the NDIS, funding may be available for reasonable and necessary vehicle modifications where these directly relate to the participant's disability and are required to meet their mobility needs.
What is Covered?
The NDIS may fund the following vehicle modification supports where they are directly related to the participant's disability:
- ✅ Passenger and Wheelchair Hoists: To safely lift a participant or their wheelchair into the vehicle.
- ✅ Modified Driving Controls: Such as hand controls or pedal adjustments for individuals with limited limb function.
- ✅ Modified Restraints and Car Seats: Including harnesses and other specialised seating needs.
- ✅ Certification Costs: Costs associated with ensuring the vehicle complies with registration and safety regulations after modifications.
- ✅ Additional Vehicle Insurance Premium Costs: If premiums increase solely due to the modification.
- ✅ Assessment and Prescription Services: Costs for professional services to assess, prescribe, deliver, adjust, and train participants in the use of vehicle modifications.
- ✅ Maintenance and Consumables: Maintenance, spare parts, and consumable items specifically required for the assistive products or modifications.
What is Not Covered?
The following are not funded by the NDIS:
- ❌ Modifications to public transport vehicles or taxis.
- ❌ Vehicle modifications that do not comply with Australian laws, the National Construction Code, or mandated safety standards.
- ❌ Standard vehicle costs such as the purchase of the vehicle, registration, insurance, car washes, or mechanical repairs not related to NDIS-funded modifications.
Approval Requirements
Vehicle modifications fall under the category of “Requires NDIS Approval”. This means:
- ⚠️ The modification must be specifically written into the participant's NDIS Plan or have written My NDIS Contact / Delegate approval.
- It is a higher-risk category and not automatically included, even if funding is available.
To proceed, participants typically need:
- An assessment by an accredited Occupational Therapist (OT) or relevant specialist.
- A written report outlining the need, safety, and functional benefit of the modification.
- Quotes from qualified modification providers.
