What is Specialist Positive Behaviour Support?
Specialist Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) involves evidence-informed strategies delivered by professionals with specialist skills to help reduce and manage behaviours of concern. The aim of these supports is to improve the quality of life and social outcomes for participants by building the capacity of the individual and their support network.
PBS is tailored to each individual’s needs and is focused on positive approaches, not punitive or restrictive practices.
What does this support include?
Specialist Positive Behaviour Support can include:
- Assessment of the participant’s behaviours of concern and the development of a behaviour support plan.
- Implementation of a comprehensive positive behaviour support plan.
- Training and capacity building for the participant’s informal supports (such as family members or carers) to help them implement the plan effectively.
- Training and ongoing monitoring of support staff in the use of positive behaviour strategies.
- Development of interim or transitional plans to ensure the participant is supported while a comprehensive plan is being developed.
