This guide provides an overview of supports the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) may fund to assist with your health and wellbeing. It’s important to note that this is only a guide to assist you make an informed decision. Only your My NDIS Contact, an NDIS Delegate, or the explicit written information in a current NDIS plan serves as the source of truth. The NDIS considers requests based on whether the support is related to your disability and whether it meets the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines.

Commonly Funded Supports - Low Risk
These supports are generally included in your plan without needing extensive supporting evidence:
Disability Related Health Supports
- ✅ Supports, services, and assistive products to manage continence
- ✅ Assistance for complex communication or behaviours when accessing health services, such as, support worker during hospital visit
Personal Wellbeing Activities
Supports that help maintain or improve physical mobility or wellbeing, often funded under Capacity Building – Improved Health and Wellbeing (Support Category 12). It's important to note that it would be best to gain confirmation from your Plan Manager or My NDIS Contact to confirm there is enough evidence that these supports are directly required due to a disability-related need:
- ✅ Exercise physiology
- ✅ Personal training by qualified professionals
- ✅ Programs to increase strength, mobility, balance, and independence
Related to Health
- ✅ Short-term assistance around life transitions such as hospital discharge if directly related to disability
Related to Mental Health
- ✅ Short-term assistance with transitions out of mental health settings if directly related to disability
Sometimes Funded Supports - Evidence Required
These supports may be funded by the NDIS with the right supporting evidence or written NDIS confirmation:
NDIS Evidence Required:
- ⚠️ Disability Related Health Supports: e.g., supports for managing dysphagia, diabetes, wound care, nutrition, seizures
- ⚠️ Training for carers: e.g., diabetes management
- ⚠️ Community Nursing Care: catheter care, medication management, skin checks, tracheostomy care
- ⚠️Wellbeing Activities: pilates, yoga, personal training (if CB Health and Wellbeing support category is not in the NDIS plan)
Supports NOT Funded by the NDIS
These items are not covered by the NDIS because they are considered:
- Day-to-day living costs
- Not evidence-based
- More appropriately funded by another system
Disability Related Health Supports (Best Funded Elsewhere):
- ❌ Hearing services covered by the Hearing Services Program
- ❌ Pharmaceuticals (prescription and non-prescription medicines)
Energy and Healing Practices (Not Evidence-Based):
- ❌ Life, wellness, cultural, or career coaches
- ❌ Hypnotherapy, Neurofeedback, Somatic therapy, Kinesiology
Lifestyle Costs (Day-to-Day Living):
- ❌ General health, fitness, recreational activities
- ❌ Activity consumables (e.g., art supplies)
Nursing Care (Health System Responsibility):
- ❌ Nursing for general health events, not related to disability
- ❌ Hospital-type nursing care not disability-related
Personal Wellbeing Activities (Not Evidence-Based):
- ❌ Gym memberships, swimming lessons, wellness coaches
- ❌ Recreational club memberships
Related to Health (Excluded by NDIS):
- ❌ Health insurance, ambulance membership, Medicare gaps
- ❌ Fertility treatments, smoking cessation aids
- ❌ Massage for general wellbeing (unless by allied health)
- ❌ Sports supplements, vitamins, herbal remedies
- ❌ All hospital and clinical services, diagnostic assessments, acute and chronic treatments
Related to Mental Health:
- ❌ Clinical mental health treatments, hospital-based mental health services
- ❌ Rehabilitation, residential care for mental health treatment
Related to Justice:
- ❌ Clinical supports in secure mental health settings
Participant Responsibilities
NDIS participants must:
✅ Know their NDIS Plan Goals
✅ Understand Budget Categories and their rules
✅ Follow any specific stated supports in their plan
✅ Use funds within the plan period
✅ Spend only on supports that meet the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines
