The following guide provides information about what the NDIS may fund in relation to Travel and Transport Supports.
It’s important to note that this is only a guide to assist you make an informed decision. Only your My NDIS Contact, an NDIS Delegate, or the explicit written information in a current NDIS plan serves as the source of truth. The NDIS considers requests based on whether the support is related to your disability and whether it meets the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines.

Low Risk Supports – Commonly Funded
These supports are commonly funded by the NDIS and typically included in a participant’s plan without the need for extensive evidence, provided the relevant Support Category (02: Transport) is available.
Travel and Transport Related Supports
If you have 02: Transport funding in your plan, the following may be supported:
- ✅ Taxi services
- ✅ Rideshare (e.g., Uber, Ola)
- ✅ Other private transport arrangements
Assistance With Travel Arrangements
Supports may include:
- ✅ Transport for community-based activities (e.g., social groups, therapies)
- ✅ Transport to and from school or educational facilities when unable to access other transport supports due to disability related needs
- ✅ Provider travel costs where the provider is delivering services
- ✅ Costs for taxis, rideshares, or private transport (e.g., Uber)
- ✅Travel training to build confidence and independence using public transport
Sometimes Funded by the NDIS – Evidence Required
These supports may be funded if they are listed in your NDIS Plan or you obtain written confirmation from your My NDIS Contact or NDIS Delegate.
These supports require additional evidence and approval:
- ⚠️ Car hire
- ⚠️ Public transport: Bus, Ferry, Train fares
- ⚠️ Flights (when directly related to your disability needs)
Not Funded by the NDIS
The following are not funded by the NDIS because they are considered:
- Day-to-day living costs
- Better funded by other services
- ❌ Transport for children as part of family/caregiver responsibilities
- ❌ Petrol, diesel, or gas
- ❌ Travel unrelated to a participant’s disability
- ❌ Ambulance services or health transport
- ❌ Travel or accommodation for parents visiting children in out-of-home care (OOHC)
- ❌ Transport for school activities (excursions, carnivals)
- ❌ Employer responsibilities or work-related transport
- ❌ Accessible public transport fares or concessions
- ❌ Transport costs for non-NDIS funded animals
- ❌ Airline lounge access fees
- ❌ Community transport services
- ❌ Transport infrastructure (roads, footpaths)
- ❌ Modifications to public transport or taxis
Participant Responsibilities
NDIS participants play a key role in managing their supports responsibly. Here’s what participants need to know:
