The following information is to provide you with examples of what the NDIS may fund. It’s important to note that this is only a guide to assist you make an informed decision. Only your My NDIS Contact, an NDIS Delegate, or the explicit written information in a current NDIS plan serves as the source of truth. The NDIS considers requests based on whether the support is related to your disability and whether it meets the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary Guidelines.
What are Cognition and Communication Consumables?
Cognition and communication supports help participants who experience challenges with memory, organisation, understanding, interpreting, or expressing themselves. These supports aim to promote independence, safety, and participation in everyday activities.
Low Risk Supports
These supports are typically funded when the participant’s disability-related needs align, and appropriate documentation is provided. Some supports may require confirmation of eligibility, especially where cognitive impairment is a factor.
Examples of Low Risk Supports:
- ✅ Auslan Interpreting Supports: Sign language interpreting for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- ✅ Active Listening Devices: Devices such as modified fire alarms for hearing or cognitive support needs.

- Modified Planners
- Calendar clocks
- Diaries designed for cognitive impairments or dementia

- Visual aids/schedules
- Visual timers to assist with routines and time management

Supports Requiring NDIS Approval
These supports are considered higher-risk or less commonly funded and require explicit approval through the participant’s NDIS Plan or written confirmation from your My NDIS Contact.
Examples Requiring Approval:
- ⚠️ Most other supports unless they are required for safety and vital for personal care needs.
Approval must be clearly documented within the participant’s plan or via My NDIS Contact confirmation.
Supports Not Funded by the NDIS
The following items and services are generally considered everyday living costs or outside the scope of the NDIS and are not funded:
❌ Technology and Communication Devices:
- Internet devices such as modems, routers, landline phones, mobile phones (including smartphones), and related accessories.
- Tablets, iPads, and standard computers.
- Internet, landline, and mobile phone plans or data costs.
❌ Entertainment and Education Tools:
- Standard gaming consoles and subscription services (e.g., Netflix, gaming).
- Musical instruments and music-related products.
- General education resources, including:
- Personalised learning materials
- Modified computer hardware
- Educational software
- Braille textbooks
❌ Health-Related Consumables:
- Non-prescription medicines, vitamins, weight loss products, homeopathic remedies, and sport supplements.

- All supports must be reasonable and necessary and directly related to the participant’s disability.
