Is this funded by the NDIS?
No, the NDIS does not fund holidays, cruises, travel accommodation, or any associated personal travel expenses. This is outlined in the List of supports that are not NDIS Supports PDF (p.6).
Why is it not funded?
These are considered day-to-day living and personal lifestyle costs that are not related to your disability support needs. The NDIS does not fund:
- ❌ Cruises, holiday packages, interstate or overseas travel
- ❌ Travel insurance, passports, visas, and meals included in holiday bookings
- ❌ Accommodation to attend or participate in work, study, theatre, cinema, sporting events, conferences, or other social, business, or private events
NDIA Requirements
- ❌ The NDIS will not fund general holiday costs under any circumstances
- ⚠️ If you require support while on holiday, the NDIS may fund the support worker hours only if directly related to your disability needs and if this is the most cost-effective way to provide your supports
What evidence is required?
If seeking funding for support worker assistance during travel, you will need:
- A goal in your plan that the travel supports
- A Support Coordinator or allied health professional report explaining why support is needed during travel and why it cannot be provided in other ways
- Evidence that the cost is solely for the support worker, not for accommodation or travel costs themselves
What’s next?
These costs are not funded by the NDIS, so you will need to pay for your own travel, holidays, and accommodation privately. If you require support worker assistance during travel, discuss with your planner or Support Coordinator to ensure this is included in your plan with appropriate evidence.
