Is this funded by the NDIS?
NDIS transport funding is available to participants who cannot use public transport due to their disability. This funding can help cover the cost of:
-
Taxis or community transport services to get to:
-
Work or education
-
Community activities related to your NDIS goals
-
-
Private transport arrangements (e.g. paying someone to drive you if you’re unable to use public transport)
You may receive this funding as a regular payment directly to you, which you can then use to pay for eligible transport services. If you do not, then you may be able to utilise your existing Core Support funding to pay for Transport
📝 Note: If you already receive funding for a support worker to drive you around (called transport as part of a support worker’s role), that funding is usually included in your Core Supports under “Assistance with Social and Community Participation” instead—not the transport budget.
What’s Not Covered by NDIS Transport Funding?
Transport funding under the NDIS is not intended to cover general travel costs that anyone might have, such as:
- Driving your own car (fuel, insurance, registration, car maintenance)
- Transport for family members or carers
- Non-disability-related travel
- Daily errands (like grocery shopping or visiting friends not related to an NDIS goal)
Also, public transport fares are not funded unless you have a specific disability-related need that stops you from using public transport.
